Blockley, Batsford and the Arboretum

This walk commences in the serene village of Blockley in the Cotswolds, continuing through Batsford village at the entrance to Batsford Park, now known as Batsford Arboretum, renowned for its diverse collection of trees and shrubs.

Blockley thrived during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as a centre for silk weaving, primarily supplying the ribbon industry in Coventry. Today, the village features a picturesque stream that once powered six silk mills, now transformed into charming cottages.

Established in the nineteenth century by Lord Redesdale, a former British Ambassador to Japan and a passionate collector of rare flora, Batsford Arboretum showcases influences from Japanese garden design. It boasts 90 species of magnolias, maples, cherry trees, and conifers, offering breathtaking displays in autumn and vibrant colours throughout spring and summer. Visitors can also enjoy amenities such as a falconry centre, garden centre, and café serving a variety of hot meals, beverages, and cakes—a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch.

Walk from village of Blockley to Batsford village and back passing Batsford Arboretum on the way.
